5 tips for flourishing Daffodils

The symbol of spring, Narcissus — or Daffodils as they are commonly called — are coming to the end of their flowering season. These bulbs go from January to beginning of May, with highly scented and cheerful blooms brightening our gardens and beyond.

Very reliable and rewarding, here are 5 tips to remember when growing Narcissi to achieve the best blooms possible:

  1. Remove seed heads after flowering

  2. Let the leaves dry out until they become yellow before taking off, and don’t tie them up — this prevents all the nutrients being transported into the bulb for next years’ growth

  3. Avoid planting in dense shade and under shrubs and trees

  4. Watch out for moisture availability when leaves are emerging and developing

  5. Feed or mulch with compost in spring
