How to grow camellias in pots

We love camellias β€” they are one of the first plants to open their blooms in late winter or early spring and so attract a lot of attention. They produce flowers over a relatively long time, and together with their glossy leaves they are a much admired garden favourite.

Because camellias prefer slightly acid soil it’s not always possible to plant them in open ground, but when grown in pots they are very easy to look after, and produce fine specimens. Some of the smaller varieties of camellias preferable for container growing can be found on Crocus.

For success, there are a few points to remember when planting and looking after the plant:

  • Use ericaceous compost and pot a size larger then the root ball

  • Allow for good drainage so the plant can be kept moist but not waterlogged

  • Place camellias in slightly shaded spot away from morning sunshine

  • Feed in spring with ericaceous fertiliser for health and longevity

  • Prune lightly back to size after flowering
