Grasscycling for a Healthier Lawn

Lush Green Lawn

Grasscycling or mulchmowing can help you to grow a beautiful and healthy lawn that you can be proud of. By returning the grass clippings to the lawn it can provide 20 to 50% of the lawns nutritional requirements reducing the need to apply additional fertilisers. Not only that, it doesn’t require you to haul away heavy bags of grass clippings making the job much easier.

Grasscycling does not cause a build up of thatch in the lawn the grass clippings decompose very fast providing essential nurients for the lawn.

Best results are obtained by using a mulching mower which cuts the clippings into smaller pieces which don’t create clumps on the surface of the lawn. It is also best done in dry weather as wet conditions can cause the clippings to stick and create a messy finish.

Mowing the lawn correctly is also essential for a healthy lawn that looks lush, green and smart. The two essential parts of an effective mowing regime are height of cut and frequency.

Everybody thinks they want a bowling green lawn of very short, perfectly manicured turf, but why? It looks great on the TV but in reality when you realize the time and resources needed to create and maintain such a lawn it would not actually be worthwhile for most people.

Raising the height of cut increases the length of the root of the grass plant, so cutting to a higher level automatically increases the amount of water and nutrients the grass can access through the larger root zone. Cutting to 4 or 5cm gives a tidy vigorous green appearance.

It is also important not to cut too much off the grass in one go. As a rule of thumb never cut more than a third of the grass leaf off in one cut. Cutting more will stress the plant and weaken the lawn overall.

Mowing frequently enough to only take off a third of the leaf is the second part of an effective mowing regime.

By mowing more frequently you don’t have to cut too much of the lawn and in return you cultivate a thicker, healthier sward of emerald green grass that looks fantastic all year round and is an wonderful asset to your property.
